CANCELED – Labor Day 2019 Whaleback Para-Picnic
August 31 @ 6:00 pm - September 1 @ 8:00 pm
Based on our Facebook poll, this event has been canceled. We’re looking into another get together at Potato Hill in late September
Picnic at Whaleback!
There are some great flying sites in the area of Mt. Shasta, and it’s our understanding that a number of Bay Area Pilots will be visiting and maybe flying here during Labor Day weekend. In an effort to support our community, BAPA will be holding a Picnic at the Whaleback LZ on Saturday and Sunday Evening (BAPA will supply a main, please bring sides to share). So, whether you choose to visit the lava caves, fly Whaleback or Herd peak, swim at Juanita lake, or whatever, please consider joining us for some food!
The picnic will be held somewhere close to the LZ along Military Pass road. The LZ is located here: Link to Google Maps and there are a number of pull out/basic/rough camping spots located north and south of the LZ along Military Pass road. Additionally, many people choose to stay at the Deer Mountain Snowmobile Park which offers proper camping and RV parking. Information: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/klamath/recarea/?recid=13173 and Reservations: https://www.funfactoryrentals.com/deer-mountain.
If you’ve never flown here before, Whaleback is administered by RVHPA and it’s a P3 site or P2 + mentor/instructor. Same goes for Herd Peak just to the north of our picnic location (RVHPA Site Guide for Herd Peak).
If you’re a P2, please coordinate to pair up with a mentor or instructor (perhaps via our Facebook event page or reaching out to RVHPA). Because of insurance, BAPA is not organizing any flying activities/logistics/etc.
🔥 Campfires are not allowed, and you need a fire permit (available online http://www.preventwildfireca.org/Campfire-Permit/) for a camp stove.
Disclaimer: Due to insurance, this is NOT a BAPA organized fly-in. These sites are insured by RVHPA, and any flying here should be done in compliance with their established site rules. We understand that a number of BAPA pilots intend to fly in the area during Labor Day Weekend on their own, and BAPA would like to support our pilots by offering picnic supplies on Saturday and Sunday evening. If you have questions about flying opportunities in the area, please ask your fellow BAPA pilots or reach out to the Rogue Valley Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association. We would highly encourage all pilots to become familiar with the details on the RVHPA website if they choose to fly: http://rvhpa.org/site-guide/whaleback/
