BAPA Light Wind Launch Clinic: Saturday, October 12, 2013, 09:00am - 12:00pm

Most of us hope for a nice steady breeze when launching. When the wind is light, what to do? Some folks wait for a stronger cycle (which may or may not come). Some folks pop open a beer, deciding it's not that great a day for flying anyway. Some folks wait until the sun goes down, and THEN pop open the beer. Really they are all just avoiding the dreaded Light Wind Launch.

In this clinic, we will be sharing the two most common light wind launch techniques: the forward launch and the running (or dynamic) reverse launch. In many ways these two launches are quite similar, but sometimes one is preferable to the other.  We will watch demonstrations of the launches, review when and how to do each one, and learn the key elements. Then we'll do the most important step in developing a strong light wind launch technique: practice!

We will gather in the LZ at Ed Levin County Park in Milpitas and practice on the 40' hill or the windsock hill (or even just in the flats!). There is no set number of participants, but if you RSVP then we can make sure we have enough people to give feedback.

Clinic leaders: Julie Spiegler and Gever Tulley (both Advanced Instructors, flying since 1990).

(Rain Date: Saturday, October 19, if participants are available.)

Location : Ed Levin County Park, Milpitas

Contact : Julie Spiegler

March 6, 2013 BAPA Meeting Minutes

BAPA Meeting Minutes

 Written by Daniel Bremond.

The meeting was held at Round Table Pizza in Milpitas.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m.

In attendance were 21 persons made up of 18 club members, 2 not-yet-pilots, and Jugdeep (Jug) Aggarwal, BAPA club member and also new USHPA Director for Region 2.

The meeting was presided by Susan K  President.

Susan asked everybody to introduce themselves.

Officer Reports:

Robin C – Treasurer

The club (before removing members having not yet renewed their membership) accounts for approximately 150 members.

Remember BAPA membership is based upon the calendar year. So if you have not yet renewed for 2013, please do it quickly before March-end in order to avoid being removed from the member database.

To renew, go to the BAPA website and follow the instructions.

http://sfbapa.org/membership-renewal

Dave M - Activities

The schedule of events was sent the day of the meeting. The website has been updated. However there are a few changes:

·         Potato Hill fly-in on the week-end of April 20th will be held at Dunlap due to the multiple closures in the Potato Hill area.

·         Saturday April 20th is also Earth Day, and BAPA is looking for a volunteer (not attending the Fly-in) to lead the BAPA cleanup team at Mussel Rock.

·         There will be two Kiting Clinics in Vallejo, April 6 and August 3.  Followed by site-intros at nearby flying sites.

·         Also in preparation, Robin C is working on a first aid clinic tailored for paragliders in one day (rather than 15 hours – so no certification). The cost so far is very high, and BAPA may contribute to the tuition.

Chip S – Vice President

·         Chip is looking for BAPA/USHPA participation at the Berkeley Festival held the last week-end of July. Instructors and tandems are encouraged to participate, advertise, show videos and recruit new pilots.

Dan R – Site Director

·         Dan proposed participating in the North Launch cleanup at Dunlap. After a discussion questioning who uses the North Launch, what kind of cleanup is needed, and what kind of tools are necessary, the consensus was: we are not interested in the North Launch.

Old and New Business

  • A new pilot asked what are the recommended Fly-in’s for beginners (P2)?
    • Answer: Dunlap is P3 or P2 sponsored.
    • From Jug A.: Coming to the Cross Country League is a good opportunity to improve your skills.
  • Email from Jeff: The main person responsible at Hat Creek is retiring, and someone needs to step in, in order to keep contact with the Rangers and work to the flying permit. The consensus is that Wally A is well aware of the issues and we depend on him to tell us if there is something to be done.
  • John would like to have the Mission site rating reduced to P3, and asked what could be done by BAPA for that. The consensus was nothing.
  • Jug A introduced the XC League, which is starting this month.
  • Jug A also encouraged members, wishing to bring a topic before the USHPA Board of Directors, to talk to him. (The spring meeting is being held this month.)

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m.

The entertainment was a presentation by Honza Rejmanek on the Red Bull X-Alps Race in Europe.

Susan K introduced Honza.

The Red Bull X-Alp Race is held every other year. Honza participated 3 times (2007, 2009, and 2011) and is training for the 2013 race.

He will be helped partially thru the funding of the American Paragliding team.

People present were encouraged to donate cash.

BAPA January 2013 meeting minutes

BAPA January 9, 2013 Meeting Minutes

Written by Daniel Bremond

The meeting was held at Round Table Pizza in South San Francisco.

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m.

In attendance were 11 club members.

The meeting was presided by Susan K .

Old and New Business

·                     Officers for 2013. All the board members for 2012 have been re-elected for 2013 in the same position. See the website for details:

http://sfbapa.org/component/comprofiler/userslist/BAPA%20Officers%20and%20Volunteers?Itemid=490

·                     Susan asked everybody to introduce themselves. One new member John.

·                     Susan announced that the sites: Blue Rock and Benicia do not belong anymore to BAPA but will be under the authority of a new USHPA chapter.

·                     Ricardo reported that so far 41 members have renewed their membership for 2013 (1/3 of the expected year end membership).

It is a good occasion to remind people that the membership runs on a calendar year schedule.

So if you have not renewed yet your membership, please do it as soon as possible.

Go to the website and verify your member info: http://sfbapa.org/cb-user-profile

Then click on Membership Renewal and follow the instructions.

·                     Jessie and Gary installed 6 new wind socks at Mussel Rock.

Officer Reports in chronology order:

Dave M - Activities

Dave summarized the past and coming events on the calendar:

·                     BAPA Christmas Party December 1st at RJ Mical's house in Redwood City was a big success. The Officers thanks RJ for his hospitality. RJ refused any financial help (like rug cleaning ) after the party. In order to thank him, a motion was moved seconded and voted to offer RJ a free BAPA membership for 2013.

·                     The activity calendar for 2013 will be finalized before the next BAPA meeting.

Chip S – Vice President

Each year, last week of July, there is a kite festival in Berkeley. This festival attracts people in the range of 10 000.

Chip suggested that it could be a good marketing move to have BAPA and/or USHPA present at this festival. Chip suggested to reserve a spot, have a tent, demonstrate kitting etc..

Daniel B - Secretary

In order to make Hang gliding and Paragliding more popular in the area of Mount Umunhum (a hopefully future flying site) Daniel is investigating how to grant the Los Gatos library a subscription to the USHPA magazine.

Susan K – President

Susan reported the partial results of some BAPA members competing in Mexico and Columbia.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m.

The entertainment was several short films from this year recent Norcal Free Flight Festival.

Next BAPA Fly-in, Potato Hill, September 21st-22nd, 2013

Update 9/19/13:

Pilots,

I am cancelling the fly-in at Potato this weekend due to weather.  Saturday looks cloudy and rainy and Sunday may be flyable, but camping and a potluck in the rain on Saturday is not ideal.  See you at the next BAPA event!

Dave McMillan

BAPA Activities Director

Hello Members,

The next BAPA fly-in will be held at Potato Hill on September 21st-22nd, 2013.

We'll plan a Potluck Dinner on Saturday night.  Please let me know if you plan on attending by replying to (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ).  Early next week I'll set up an Evite with the attendees where we can plan out dinner, work on rides, etc.

If you have not been to Potato Hill before please look at this link to get more information:

http://www.flyzephyr.com/potato.htm

We will be camping at Dixie Glade campground on the side of Potato Hill. The camping is primitive and somewhat remote: there is an outhouse and fire pits but no water, and the nearest store is about 40 minutes away. Please plan to bring all the food and water you will need with you.  There is a 5 dollar per night fee for camping there.

NOTE TO NEWER PILOTS:

Potato Hill is informally regulated by BAPA and Sonoma Wings and although there are no rating requirements please be aware that it is a (usually) lee side mountain thermal site with an LZ that often has thermic, turbulent air (it's poppy!). If you have little to no mountain experience Potato can be a good place to build your skills but you should plan to fly early in the day and/or in the evening if conditions allow.

See you soon!

David McMillan
