The meeting was held at Round Table Pizza in South San Francisco.

The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m.

In attendance were 10 paraglider pilots/club members.

The meeting was presided over by Dave McMillan Activities Director.

Old and New Business

Congratulations Julie Spiegler, our new Women US Open Distance Champion. She won her new title at an every other year competition in Utah.

Coming soon a work party at Mission, organized by Daniel Retz the Site Director.

There was another incident at Fort Funston. A PG flying there. BAPA Management will talk directly to people involved.

Bapa Christmas party is scheduled for December 7. We do not have a location yet.

Daniel B suggested to look at renting a city room in a convenient location. Depending upon the city the cost may be between 100 and 200 dollars, for a big meeting room with a small kitchen with a microwave. As we usually do a pot-luck, the food is covered. The rental cost may balance the cost of cleaning (rug) when the party is held in a private house. Daniel suggested that the ones living in a central location look at what their city offers as rental space.

Officer Reports:

Dave M - Activities

Past activities:

The recent Dunlap fly-in had a good turn out.

The kiting clinic was a great success.

About 30 persons attended the Ed Levin Picnic.

Coming up:

·      Potato Hill flying has been canceled since the meeting due to bad weather.

·      Coastal cleanup scheduled for Saturday September 21 has been coordinated by Dave M.

·      Light Wind Launch Clinic October 12 at Ed Levin by Julie Spiegler. The clinic will start early in the day, before the wind starts blowing, as the clinic requires no wind.

  • We are looking for a volunteer to organize the Big Sur Halloween Monster Mash for the week-end before Halloween (October 26-27).

Daniel B – Secretary

Helmetiquette. Daniel explained the value of the free tag on the helmet and encouraged people to ask for it.

Sunnyvale Landfill:

The city of Sunnyvale is studying to open an old landfill hill (80 feet high) to recreational activities.

Daniel, representing BAPA asked to be allowed to fly. The hill is not very high, but long enough (longer than Fort Funston ridge) to allow ridge soaring. The thermal wind is very constant in direction, and can reach up to 25 mph at the end of a sunny day. Decision is expected in December 2013.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 p.m.

The entertainment was Julie Spiegler talking about the effective use of the various versions of tracking devices like Spot and Delorme Inreach.

Big Sur Monster Mash Fly-in, Oct 26-27th, 2013

Members,

BAPA invites you and your friends/family to attend the 2012 Monster Mash, on October 26-27, 2013 at Big Sur.

This will be a family-friendly event; non-flying partners and kids are welcome.  BAPA has reserved several individual campsites at Plaskett Creek for Friday and Saturday nights; (see http://www.recreation.gov/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=70161).  Saturday evening, after flying, we will have a Halloween party, with prizes for the best costumes, the best jack-o-laterns (i.e., decorated pumpkins, for those of you who didn't grow up in the US).  Flying-related prizes will also be awarded as well as a MVD (most valuable driver) award.  We encourage all of you to bring a bowl of candy (so the kids of all ages can go trick-or-treating) and maybe even decorate your tent!

The weather at Big Sur should be lovely this time of the year, with mild temps during the days and cooler in the evenings.  The campground has grass campsites, flush toilets and running (cold) water.  It's a nice place to hang out and it's right across the street from Sand Dollar Beach, which has spectacular views and breathtaking sunsets.

Please let me know, as soon as possible, if you plan to attend (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ).  I will send out an Evite to the confirmed attendees early next week to coordinate food for a potluck dinner.  If you plan to bring kids, please also let me know their ages (as early as possible), so we can have appropriate prizes/party favors for them.  This will be the last fly-in of the year, so you don't want to miss it!

One final note.  Currently, as of October 13th, 2013 the Plaskett Creek Campground is closed due to the current federal government shutdown.  If the campground remains closed we will have to cancel the fly-in as there are no other developed campgrounds available in the area. I will send an update on this early next week.

The April 6 Kiting Clinic in Vallejo was a success.

On April 20, Don Creasman brought coffee and bagels at Mussel Rock for the Earth Day Cleanup, but unfortunately nobody else came, probably due to the conflict with the Dunlap Fly-in.

Another bad news. There will be no Anderson Fly-in this year. Gene P, the host-organizer is working on his cabin.

Next Fly-in’s

June 8-9: Dunlap or Potato. Location not yet decided

July 4-7 Hat Creek: Two persons have already reserved a total of 8 campsites for the club.

            Late October Big Sur

Chip S – Vice President

Berkeley Kite Festival July 26-27: Due to a business trip, Chip will not be available, and is looking for a volunteer to lead the BAPA/USHPA participation. This is a good opportunity for Instructors to introduce Paragliding, recruit new students/pilots and propose tandem flights.

If you are interested, please contact Chip directly.

Robin C – Treasurer

The club (after removing members having not yet renewed their membership) accounts for 102 members. We have $ 8300 on the Bank Account.

Remember BAPA membership is based upon the calendar year. So if you have not yet renewed for 2013, please do it quickly.

To renew, go to the BAPA website and follow the instructions.

Daniel B – Secretary

We have received an email message from Tony Lang asking the club to Help to Support The 2013 U.S. Paragliding Team, and arguing that two Bapa Pilots are members of the Team.

Susan K President thru Chip S suggested to allocate $300. Ricardo pointed out that in the past the participation was at $500 level. After a discussion a motion was moved, seconded and voted to allocate $ 400 to The 2013 U.S. Paragliding Team.

Old and New Business

From a pilots about the recent XC league at Dunlap.

Some pilots do not respect the landing area. The land owner told him there have been 4 or 5 incidents

The meeting was adjourned at 7:36 p.m.

The entertainment was showing several portions of Jocky Sanderson's "Security in Flight 2", an excellent DVD on SIV maneuvers that just came out recently.
